ROOKS FALL TO SAMBA ON LATE
GOAL
The Chico Rooks were edged by the Salinas Samba
2 – 1 on a goal netted in the 87th minute of play by Ivan Campos in Salinas.
The Rooks held their own throughout the match, adapting well to the artificial
turf and tight constraints of the narrow pitch at Salinas High School. Chico
tallied 18 shots on goal to 17 for the Samba.
Salinas scored
the first goal of the match in the 12th minute as David Estrada dropped a pass
to Julio Gonzales who buried a shot to the lower left corner from the 16 yard
line. Chico equalized in the 36th minute as Calum Robertson out jumped his
opponent nd headed in a corner kick by Donnie Ribaudo from10 yards out. The
half ended deadlocked at 1 – 1.
At the start
ofthe second period, Chico had the run of play. However, in the 60th minute
midfielder Anthony Putrus was forced to leave the game after sustaining an
injury after being fouled on a headball. Over the final 30minutes of play,the
game opened up with both teams pushing players forward for the gamewinner.
Chico narrowly took the lead as Joao Macedo hit the post twice on headers and
Kieth Ratzburg had two shots just sail wide of the post..
With three
minutes left to play in regulation, Campos netted the winning goal as he headed
in a cross from 12 yards out on a free kick by Joel Sanchez. “That was a tough
loss for us,” said Rooks caoch David Stahl, “we played well tactically but just
couldn’t finish our chances.” Chico will travel to San Jose to face the
Frogson Sunday at 3:00.
