ROOKS OFF TO SEATTLE FOR
REGION IV CHAMPIONSHIP
The Chico Rooks will travel to
Seattle, Washington this weekend to participate in the United States Adult
Soccer Association (USASA) Region IV Championships to be held at the Starfire
Sports Complex.
Four teams from the Western
Division of National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) will compete along with four
teams from Region IV State Associations. The teams will be divided into two
brackets of four and play a round robin with the winner of each group advancing
to the USASA Region IV Final.
The Rooks, in Group B, will face
the Sonoma County Sol, their NPSL rival, on Friday night and SudaCa and Mexicali
FC on Saturday. The final is scheduled for Sunday. Group A will consist of the
Sacramento Knights and the San Jose Frogs, both NPSL teams, along with the
Arizona Sahuaros and Washington FC. The winners of each group will advance to
the next round of the prestigious Lamar Hunt US Open Cup to be played in June.
The overall winner of the tournament will advance to the Final Four of the USASA
National Open Cup to be held in Dallas, Texas on August 4th – 6th.
Chico has won the Region IV
Championship twice (2003 and 2004) in three attempts. In 2003 the Rooks fell to
the Milwaukee Bavarians in the National Open Cup Final in Milwaukee. The
following year the Chico Rooks claimed the National Open Cup Championship by
defeating the Dallas Legends by a score of 3- 1 in the final in Orlando,
Florida.
The Rooks game on Friday in
Seattle will double count as an Open Cup game and a NPSL regular season game.
The Rooks NPSL match with the Frogs scheduled for Sunday, May 21st in
San Jose has been rescheduled for Friday, June 9th.
