ROOKS HOST TOP SEEDED
KNIGHTS FRIDAY NIGHT
1st Annual CUSD Healthy Like Challenge Night
Friday evening the Chico Rooks play their North Valley rivals, the Sacramento
Knights, at the soccer stadium on the Chico State campus. Kick off is slated for
7:30. All Chico Unified School District (CUSD) elementary school students that
have taken the ‘Rooks Challenge’ to make the choice to live a healthier life
will be admitted to the event free of charge.
Last Friday the Rooks fell to the Sonoma County Sol on a goal after regulation
time had expired by a score of 1 – 0. The Sol netted the game winner after being
awarded a free kick 20 yards out in injury time. The Rooks are currently in 4th
place in the conference with a 3 – 1 – 2 record (11 points) but have a game in
hand.
The Knights pummeled a fatigued Sonoma by a score of 5 –2 on the following
night. Sacramento is currently in first place in the Northern Conference of the
Western Division of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) with a 5 –1 – 1
(16 points) record.
“We have a great rivalry with the Knights,” said Rooks coach David Stahl, “the
games are typically hard fought and close.” Last year Sacramento won two out of
three matches against Chico. “A lot of the players on these two teams know each
other and we are so close geographically,” added Stahl.
During the week in school 7,200 CUSD elementary students were encouraged to
participate in the Healthy Life Challenge program by committing to exercising
regularly, eating the proper foods and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.
Those taking the challenge can attend the game Friday night for free. OPT For
Fit Kids will be providing a variety of interactive activities and distribute
giveaways and literature throughout the event.
The Rooks will travel to Sacramento on Saturday to battle the Knights at
Consumes River College at 7:30 in the weekend home/home series.
