FIRST PLACE ROOKS HOST
SONOMA SOL
Chico Looks to Extend Unbeaten Streak
The Chico Rooks will battle the
Sonoma County Sol in a crucial match that will count as a National Premier
Soccer League regular season game and a US Open Cup qualifying match. The
Rooks, the only team in the Northern Conference of the Western Division of the
NPSL without a loss, are currently in first place with a 3 – 0 – 2 record.
Sonoma trails the top seeded Rooks by 2 points with a 3 - 2 – 0 record.
Last week Chico tallied a win and
a draw on the road. On Saturday night in Salinas the Rooks battled the Samba to
a 2 – 2 tie in a hard fought physical match. Sunday afternoon Chico crushed the
Redwood City Ruckus by a score of 6 – 1 in Hayward.
“We played really well last
weekend,” said Rooks head coach David Stahl, “we were unlucky not to win both
games.” In the second half of the Salinas match, the Samba keeper made several
spectacular saves to deny Chico the victory. “He kept them in the match,” said
Stahl, “those were world class saves.”
Sonoma fell to the Sacramento
Knights 3 –1 at home last week. After starting the NPSL season with three wins,
the Sol dropped their last two matches. Friday night’s game will be the first
meeting between the two Northern California rivals in 2006. Last year the Rooks
recorded one victory against three losses with the Sol.
Kick off is slated for 7:30 at the
soccer stadium on the Chico State campus. Admission is $6.00 for adults and
3:00 for youths. Children under 5 years of age are admitted free of charge.
